Animal Sciences Degree

I started at the Blue Cross as an Animal Welfare Assistant in August 2008, after completing a Foundation Degree in Animal Science and Management.
My job role as an animal welfare assistant involves all the basic animal care duties such as feeding and cleaning. I am involved in making sure all the animals receive lots of stimulation throughout the day either by taking them out on a walk, giving them a training session, playing or socializing them. I am also involved with assessing every animal that comes into the centre to see what each individual animal likes to do, note situations the animal may be nervous or wary of such as strangers or traffic. This is important for when we come to rehome the animal to ensure we put the animal in the right home. The biggest part of the role is re-homing; I am responsible for matching people and animals together depending on the requirements of both the animal and the potential adopters.
I love this role as there is a new challenge everyday! The biggest highlight is seeing an animal you have worked with go to a loving new home.
I have 2 dogs of my own, a 7 year old collie x Springer spaniel called Lucky and a 14 year old West Highland Terrier called Scruffuls.

Doing an ultrasound examination of an elephant seal pup's heart to determine the degree of a lungworm (Otostrongylus) infection. In a severe case the worms travel to the animal's heart, blocking circulation and causing death.
